Matthew Chapter 25 continues Jesus’ teaching about being ready for His return. After Matthew Ch24 warned about deception, endurance, and the coming of the Son of Man, Matthew 25 shows what readiness looks like. For more on that, see this point further in Matthew Ch24.
Jesus begins with the parable of the ten virgins. Five are wise and bring oil. Five are foolish and are not ready when the bridegroom comes. The point is clear: Christ will return, and His people must be ready. Readiness is not last-minute religious excitement. It is real faith that endures while waiting.
From a Christian Reformed lens, this does not teach that we save ourselves by staying alert. It teaches that true faith is living faith. Those whom God saves, He also keeps awake by grace. The foolish virgins look close to the wise ones for a while, but the coming of the bridegroom reveals the difference.
Then Jesus tells the parable of the talents. A master entrusts his servants with different amounts. Two servants use what they are given faithfully. One servant hides his talent in fear and laziness. When the master returns, he rewards faithfulness and judges wickedness.
This reminds us that grace does not make us passive. Christ gives His people gifts, time, opportunities, work, and responsibilities. We do not labor to earn salvation, but because we belong to the Master. This connects with Matthew Ch20, where greatness in the kingdom is shown through humble service. See this point further in Matthew Ch20.
The chapter ends with the Son of Man coming in glory and separating the sheep from the goats. This is final judgment. The sheep are those who showed mercy to Christ’s brothers. The goats ignored them. Jesus is not teaching salvation by works. He is showing that true faith produces real fruit.
Reformed theology is clear that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. But that faith is never alone. Mercy, love, and service are evidence that grace has changed the heart.
Matthew Chapter 25 teaches us to watch, serve, and live in light of Christ’s return.
The bridegroom is coming.
The Master will return.
The King will judge.
False faith will be exposed.
True faith will bear fruit.
And Christ will gather His sheep into eternal joy.
