Matthew Chapter 24: Watch, Endure, and Trust the King

Matthew Chapter 24 is one of the most serious and powerful teachings of Jesus. After Matthew Ch23 exposed religious hypocrisy and ended with Jesus grieving over Jerusalem, Matthew 24 turns to judgment, endurance, deception, and the coming of the Son of Man.

The disciples point out the temple buildings, but Jesus tells them that not one stone will be left upon another. This would have been shocking. The temple looked strong, permanent, and sacred. But Jesus teaches that even the greatest earthly religious structure cannot stand if God brings judgment. The old order is passing away, and Christ Himself is the true center of worship.

The disciples ask when these things will happen and what will be the sign of His coming. Jesus begins by warning them not to be deceived. Many will come claiming His name. There will be wars, famines, earthquakes, persecution, false prophets, and lawlessness. But Jesus says these things are not the end yet. Christians should not panic every time the world shakes. The world is unstable, but Christ is not.

From a Christian Reformed lens, Matthew 24 reminds us that history is not random. God is sovereign, meaning He rules over all things with complete authority, wisdom, and power. Even judgment, suffering, persecution, and the rise of evil do not overthrow His plan. Christ is not reacting to history. He is Lord over it.

Jesus also calls His people to endure. “The one who endures to the end will be saved.” This does not mean we save ourselves by our own strength. It means true faith perseveres because God keeps His people. The same Lord who warns His disciples also preserves them.

Jesus then speaks of the Gospel going to all nations. Even in a chapter full of judgment, mission remains. The church is not called to hide in fear, but to bear witness. The King will gather His people from every nation before the end comes.

Then Jesus describes the coming of the Son of Man with power and great glory. His return will not be secret, weak, or uncertain. As lightning flashes across the sky, so will His coming be clear. The Son of Man will come on the clouds, and His angels will gather His elect. That is comfort for believers. The world may look chaotic, but Christ will not lose one of His own.

Jesus also says that no one knows the day or hour. Therefore, His people must watch and be ready. The point is not to obsess over date-setting. The point is faithful living. We are called to live as servants who know the Master will return.

Matthew Chapter 24 teaches us that the temple may fall, nations may rage, false teachers may rise, and persecution may come, but Christ reigns over all of it.

Do not be deceived.

Do not panic.

Endure by grace.

Bear witness to the nations.

Stay awake.

The Son of Man is coming.

And when He comes, He will gather His people and make all things right.
