How to Spot and Avoid the Latest NFT “Pig Butchering” Scams

January 31, 2025  •  Leave a Comment

NFTs have become a hot spot for digital art and collectibles, but with this popularity comes a surge in scams. One particularly sneaky scam, known as "pig butchering," has been making rounds on platforms like Twitter (X) and Discord. Here's how it works and how you can protect yourself:

1. The Bait: A Lucrative Offer on Twitter (X)

- Unexpected Message: You get a DM from someone who seems like a legit NFT collector, gushing over your artwork and wanting to buy it.
- High Offer (5 ETH or More): They throw out a tempting price, like 5 ETH, to lure you in.
- Red Flag: If an offer seems too good, it probably is. Be wary of unsolicited DMs promising big bucks.

2. Don’t Be Fooled by Follower Counts

- High Follower Counts: Scammers might boost their follower count to look credible.
- Engagement Check: Look beyond the numbers—do their posts actually get real interaction?
- Red Flag: A big following doesn't mean they're trustworthy. Check if their engagement feels real.

3. The Next Step: Moving to Another Platform

- Switching Apps: The scammer pushes to move the chat to Discord or another app, claiming it's for privacy or convenience.
- Urgency: They might rush you, saying the deal's only valid for a short time.
- Red Flag: Be suspicious if they want to take the conversation off Twitter/X to avoid scrutiny.

4. The Fake “OpenSea Representative”

- Third-Party Introduction: Once on Discord, they introduce you to a supposed OpenSea rep.
- Professional Facade: This fake rep might have all the right looks but is just there to trick you.
- Technical "Verification": They'll ask for your wallet info or seed phrase under the guise of transaction verification.
- Red Flag: No legitimate marketplace will ever ask for your private keys or phrases.

5. The Wallet Grab: Stealing Your Info

- Phishing Links: They send you a link that looks like OpenSea's site but is designed to steal your data.
- Urgency: They'll keep pushing, saying you need to act fast.
- Pig Butchering: They fatten you up with promises before taking everything you've got.
- Red Flag: Never share your private key or seed phrase with anyone, no matter the promise.

6. Protecting Yourself: Best Practices

- Stay Alert: Always verify the person you're dealing with. Big numbers don't mean big trust.
- Official Channels: Use verified support channels from platforms like OpenSea to check authenticity.
- Never Share Keys: This is crypto 101. Keep your private keys private.
- URL Safety: Type in known URLs manually rather than clicking links.
- Use Secure Tools: Hardware wallets and security extensions can save your bacon.
- Enable 2FA: It's an extra shield for your accounts.
- Trust Your Gut: If something feels off, take a step back and do more research.

7. Reporting the Scam

- On Twitter (X): Report and block the scammer through the platform's reporting tools.
- On Discord: Use the report function and block the user.
- FBI IC3: If you're in the U.S., report to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at [ic3.gov](https://www.ic3.gov/).

Conclusion

Navigating the NFT world can be thrilling, but scams like these can turn your dream into a nightmare. Keep your eyes peeled for red flags, verify everything, and protect your private information. Remember, if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
