Matthew Chapter 16: The Christ, the Cross, and the Cost of Following Him

Matthew Chapter 16 is a turning point.

The chapter begins with religious leaders asking for a sign. It moves to Jesus warning His disciples about false teaching. Then Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. After that, Jesus begins to show plainly that He must suffer, die, and be raised.

The disciples are learning that Jesus is the promised King.

But His kingdom comes through the cross.

The Sign of Jonah

The Pharisees and Sadducees come to test Jesus and ask Him for a sign from heaven.

This is not honest seeking. They have already seen enough to know that God’s power is at work. They have seen healings, deliverance, mercy, authority, and provision. But they still demand more.

Jesus rebukes them. They can read the sky, but they cannot interpret the signs of the times.

Then He says no sign will be given except the sign of Jonah.

This connects with Matthew Ch12, where Jesus also spoke of Jonah as a sign pointing toward His death and resurrection. The true sign will not be a religious performance on demand. It will be the crucified and risen Christ.

In Matthew Ch15, Jesus exposed outward religion that honored God with lips while the heart was far from Him. Matthew 16 continues that warning. A person can ask for signs and still refuse the Savior.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

Jesus tells His disciples to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

At first, they think He is talking about bread.

That shows how slow they still are to understand. Jesus reminds them of the feeding of the five thousand and the feeding of the four thousand. They had seen Him provide abundantly, as in Matthew Ch14 and again in Matthew Ch15.

The issue is not bread.

The issue is teaching.

The leaven is the corrupting influence of false doctrine, unbelief, and religious hardness. A little leaven works through the whole lump. False teaching is not harmless. It shapes how people see God, sin, righteousness, mercy, and Christ Himself.

Jesus warns His disciples because they need discernment.

So do we.

You Are the Christ

Then Jesus asks His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

They give different answers: John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.

Then Jesus asks the deeper question:

“But who do you say that I am?”

Peter answers, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

That confession is the center of the chapter.

Jesus is not merely a prophet.

He is not merely a teacher.

He is the Christ, the promised Messiah, the Son of the living God.

Jesus tells Peter that flesh and blood did not reveal this to him, but the Father in heaven. That matters. True confession of Christ is not produced by human cleverness. It is grace. God opens blind eyes to see who Jesus truly is.

From a Christian Reformed lens, this is deeply humbling. We do not come to saving knowledge of Christ by natural strength. The Father reveals the Son, and faith receives Him.

Jesus also speaks of building His church and says the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. The church belongs to Christ. He builds it. He keeps it. Hell cannot overthrow what Christ Himself establishes.

The Cross Must Come

After Peter’s confession, Jesus begins to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, suffer many things, be killed, and on the third day be raised.

Peter rebukes Him.

That is shocking. The same Peter who confessed Jesus rightly now resists the cross.

Jesus says, “Get behind me, Satan!”

Peter is not Satan, but in that moment his words line up with temptation. He wants a Christ without suffering, a kingdom without the cross, glory without death.

But Jesus did not come to avoid the cross.

He came to save His people through it.

This is the heart of the Gospel. The Christ must suffer. The King must die. The Son of Man must be raised.

There is no salvation without the cross.

Take Up Your Cross

Then Jesus says that anyone who would come after Him must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Him.

This is not salvation by self-punishment or earning. We are saved by grace through Christ.

But true faith follows the crucified Lord.

To follow Jesus means we no longer belong to ourselves. We lose our lives to find true life in Him. The world may offer gain, comfort, approval, and power, but Jesus asks, “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?”

That question cuts through everything.

A person can gain the world and still lose everything.

But whoever belongs to Christ has life that cannot be taken away.

The Message of Matthew Chapter 16

Matthew Chapter 16 teaches us to see Jesus clearly.

He is the sign greater than Jonah.

He is the Christ.

He is the Son of the living God.

He is the builder of His church.

He is the suffering Savior.

And He is the Lord who calls His people to follow Him.

This chapter warns us against hard-hearted religion, false teaching, and a crossless view of Christ. It also comforts us with the strength of Jesus’ promise: “I will build my church.”

From a Christian Reformed lens, Matthew 16 brings together revelation, confession, atonement, and discipleship. The Father reveals the Son. The Son goes to the cross. The church is built by Christ. And believers follow not to earn grace, but because grace has called them.

The question remains:

Who do you say Jesus is?

Peter’s answer is still the answer of true faith.

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
