John Chapter 17: Christ Prays for His People

John Chapter 17 brings us into one of the most holy and comforting passages in the Gospel of John. Jesus has finished teaching His disciples on the night before the cross. In John Ch16, He told them that sorrow would turn into joy and that He had overcome the world. Now, before He goes to Gethsemane and then to Calvary, He lifts His eyes to the Father and prays. For more on that comfort before the cross, see this point further in John Ch16.

This chapter is often called the High Priestly Prayer. Jesus prays first concerning His glory, then for His disciples, and then for all who will believe through their word. From a Christian Reformed lens, this chapter is full of grace. Salvation begins in the will and love of God. The Father gives a people to the Son. The Son gives eternal life to those the Father has given Him. The Son keeps them, prays for them, sanctifies them by the Word, and brings them finally into glory.

Jesus begins by saying that the hour has come. In John’s Gospel, that hour points to the cross. The cross is not a surprise, an accident, or a defeat. It is the appointed hour where the Son glorifies the Father by finishing the work He was given to do. Eternal life is not merely living forever. Jesus says eternal life is knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent. This is deeply personal. The Christian life is not just moral improvement or religious activity. It is being brought by grace into true knowledge of God through Christ.

Jesus then prays for the disciples. He does not pray that they would be taken out of the world, but that the Father would keep them from the evil one. That matters. Christians are not saved in order to escape usefulness. They are kept by God while living in a hostile world. This connects with Luke Ch17, where disciples are called to live by faith and readiness before the coming Kingdom; see this point further in Luke Ch17.

Jesus also prays, “Sanctify them in the truth.” Then He says, “Your word is truth.” A Reformed guide to John 17 must pause here. God sanctifies His people through His Word. We do not make ourselves holy by spiritual energy, emotion, or self-invention. The Spirit uses the truth of Scripture to shape us into the likeness of Christ. The church must always be Word-centered because Jesus Himself prays for His people to be sanctified in the truth.

Then Jesus prays for those who will believe through the apostles’ word. That includes the church across the ages. It includes believers who were not yet born. It includes every Christian brought to faith through the witness of the Gospel. This is one of the great comforts of John 17: before His suffering, Jesus was already praying for His people.

Jesus prays that they may be one. This unity is not shallow agreement or unity at the cost of truth. It is unity rooted in the Father and the Son, created by grace, shaped by truth, and displayed in love. The church’s unity is meant to bear witness that the Father sent the Son. This connects with Mark Ch16, where the risen Christ sends the message outward after the empty tomb; see this point further in Mark Ch16.

John 17 also shows the security of believers. Jesus speaks of those given to Him by the Father. He keeps them. He prays for them. He desires that they will be with Him to see His glory. Our hope does not rest in the strength of our grip on Christ, but in the strength of Christ’s saving hold on us.

The message of John Chapter 17 is simple and beautiful. The Son glorifies the Father. The Father has given a people to the Son. The Son gives them eternal life. He keeps them in the world, sanctifies them by the truth, sends them with the Gospel, unites them in Himself, and brings them to glory.

The Christian life is covered by the prayer of Christ.

And the prayer of Christ does not fail.
